It was 1989: the big earthquake shook up San Francisco, Tim Hardaway and Shawn Kemp were just rooks, and yours truly was just a-brewin’ in the womb, but just like the aforementioned, 1989 was the year that sparked the beginnings of substantial significance on a whole number of fronts. That same year, Long Island-bred, Native Tongues-affiliated trio De La Soul dropped their debut album “3 Feet High and Rising,” making their first mark on a legacy that still reigns influential, even 25 years after that first drop. Seven albums later and a few quiet years after the Nike+ sponsored, iTunes exclusive “Are You In?” tape, De La breaks the silence with a drop aptly titled, “Dilla Plugged In” with the trio lacing classic De La lyricisms over a coveted Dilla beat. The track is the icebreaker for a monster celebration of the 25th anniversary of the debut: the crew is dropping two tapes — not one, but TWO — right before the next full-lenth LP release, one consisting of all Dilla beats called “Smell the D.A.I.S.Y.,” and the other coming from Pete Rock and DJ Premier titled “Premium Soul on the Rocks.” Looks like De La Soul is making up for drought we’ve been suffering over, but we ain’t even mad at it. Give thanks to the hip-hop gods and hit the image to hear “Dilla Plugged In” on Soundcloud.
