BBC Radio 1 + BBC 1Xtra: The Story of Q-Tip

BBC’s Benji B
couldn’t have alluded to Q-Tip better within the sum of 11 words: “Sometimes an artist or group comes along that changes people’s perspective.” A modern-day discussion on artists that presently fit that quota, folks will list out the Pharrell’s and the Kanye’s, but rewind their story and you’ll hear one name that rings throughout: Kamaal Fareed, better known as Q-Tip, the Abstract, founding member of A Tribe Called Quest. The group’s back story is no mystery: in 2011, Michael Rapaport released “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest” documenting the inception, rise and eventual break up of the storied hip-hop group, with the help from a number of ATCQ affiliates, but this is the first time where we hear the entire story from Q-Tip himself. Hit the jump to check out the audio interview and hear the story from the man who lived it, and to hear some special announcements regarding the 25th anniversary of their beloved and critically acclaimed “Low End Theory.”
