Gearing up for the drop of their highly anticipated collabo project, “There is Only Now,” Bay Area icons Souls of Mischief and Adrian Younge released their first single, giving us a familiar, albeit missed, taste of the golden era of hip-hop. The title track, featuring Snoop Dogg adding his own brand of OG cool to the track, has the Souls rapping over Younge’s organic production, which is another homage to the old school – by way of his recording approach. Spin previously reported that all tracks on the LP were to be recorded without the use of computers, and instead recorded on a 2-inch analogue tape in single takes. Younge’s methods aimed to create an album sans any sampling sounds from machines, and ensured that all instrumentation were either played by himself or with studio musicians. Younge’s approach wanted an album that was free from the constraints of any kind of “studio magic,” leaving a long forgotten purity in raw sounds and voices – just like music used to. Hit the jump to peep the track, and look out for the “There is Only Now” album drop on August 26.
