Jam On It: Stream Vince Staples “Summertime ’06” on NPR

Long Beach native Vince Staples has been rap’s radar for a minute now, but an album seemed a long way from the horizon. A year after dropping his “Hell Can Wait” EP and a number of guest appearances on the works of Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G and even Ghostface Killah, Vince is named to XXL’s 2015 Freshman Class right around when “Summertime ’06” is set to drop. The record doesn’t officially come out until June 30th, but Vince has it up for stream on NPR where the record offers a dual-perspective on coming from hood tendencies but possessing the perception and desire for more greener pastures for himself and his folks. More often than not, Vince is playing the role of villiany that’s become his penchant via the endless guest features he’s been put on but on “Summertime ’06” unearths that somewhere behind a life dedicated to gangbanging lies the anti-hero origin story.
