For Outkast purists, “Hey Ya!” is likely to fall pretty close to bottom of the barrel within the Atlanta duo’s catalog. Which is rightfully so, with “Hey Ya!” as the outlier among Andre 3000 and Big Boi’s brand of funk, jazz and blues that passed itself as hip-hop, it’s as close to bubblegum as Andre 3000 could get. “Shake it like a Polaroid picture,” is not only corny, but a totally incorrect method of Polaroid film development — from the artist stamped with the song’s creation to its ill-advice, “Hey Ya!” is misleading on all directions. And yet, Brooklyn artist KAMAU’s cover revives the song’s justice in a reduced edition on the song’s one feat that remains pure Andre: its words.
