It’s been 10 years since J Dilla left the physical world behind but his influence and spirit still rings true in modern music, from hip-hop to jazz to electronic. The week he died, Dilla’s masterful “Donuts” was released and the world mourned and celebrated his life simultaneously through this record. Just as his craft impacted neo-soul and hip-hop’s sound, Dilla death inspired many artists and producers to create in his honor, still even a decade later.
On the day Dilla died, Flying Lotus recorded a mix at dublab, bridging together eclectic selections of hip-hop, exotic international records, samples said to pass through Dilla and Madlib’s hands and of course, Dilla’s own recordings. One of the most fitting J Dilla tributes to date, even 10 years ago, Flying Lotus captured James Yancey’s essence through choice grooves and sounds that are unmatched in soul, wit and taste.
