For all the promises that April has waiting for us at the end of the proverbial internet music tunnel, it looks like Drake is holding up his end of the bargain with “Views from the 6.” If the two new tracks he dropped today, “One Dance” and “Pop Style” are any indication of what “Views” might be like, the record is set to uphold the Drizzy hit-making factory standard.
“One Dance” shows off Drake’s new affection for dancehall beats and reassuring his compatibility with the genre’s bounce and the sing-songy vocals we saw on Rihanna’s “Work.” Nigeria’s Wizkid of “Ojuelegba” fame has a guest spot along with Kyla providing another layer of vocals to add a touch of sweetness. “Pop Style” teams up rap moguls alongside modern rap’s Midas. 6God Drizzy is back at work here, flaunting his braggadocio because when you’re Champagne Papi rapping next to Watch the Throne, what else are you supposed to do?
With a looming release date hanging over our heads, the countdown to “Views” is anxiety-inducing at best. We’re about five days into April, meaning there’s about 25 days left at the most before the rap world can get their paws on the much-anticipated Drake record. Spry singles and guest verses here and there have quenched the Drizzy thirst, but the oasis sought is a full-fledged album that was promised to us damn near a year ago. First it’s Frank Ocean, then Drake, then Kanye removes Vic Mensa from “Wolves,” and now Chance the Rapper has us awaiting another project… does rap not want to give us what we want??
For the moment, it looks like at least we’re getting “Views.” Not even mad though. Peep both new songs below and let us know what you think.
