De La Soul Releases New Album and Short Documentary

The highly anticipated album And The Anonymous Nobody is now available.

Kelvin “Plug Won” Mercer, David “Trugoy” Jolicoeur and Vincent “Maseo” Mason emerged in 1987 New York as the legendary hip-hop group De La Soul. Since then, they have “empowered a new generation of MCs and fans to color outside the yellow lines of the asphalt jungle, charting a new course in the process.”

You may recall the group’s much-publicized Kickstarter campaign back in March. An iconic group who paved the way for so many artists today shouldn’t have had to resort to crowdfunding. But the community definitely came together to see this album come to fruition. Hip-hop fans all over the world helped De La Soul raise over $650,000, reaching the group’s goal of $110,000 within hours of launching the campaign. Along with the release of their new album comes a project in which they filmed their journey from recording to releasing the album in the documentary We’re Still Here (Now). The group’s vision and passion for hip-hop music are transparent throughout the short doc, showing why they are (and still is) a staple in the hip-hop community.

The 17-track masterpiece is the group’s eighth studio album since their “game changing” debut in 1989 and features cameos from David Byrne, Usher, Jill Scott, David Byrne, 2 Chainz, Estelle and Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz), and Little Dragon among others. Snoop Dogg lends his skills to the project’s first single Pain, which was released on June 1. Download/purchase the album here. And for upcoming live shows check out the schedule here.
