It’s Not Xmas Without Mariah

There’s a reason we all keep singing Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

Right after the last remnants of turkey slices disappeared, the Christmas season clocked in and quickly took over. From store decorations, TV shows, and even the music on the radio, Xmas wants you to get your wallets ready. Yes, it’s that time of the year folks, you either love it or wish for NYE to come sooner. Amidst the frantic hustle of finding gifts for everyone on your list, you’ll be bombarded with a holiday song that will forever ring in your head…or at least until Christmas is over.

Heading into a busy mall, I decided that a Starbucks coffee was necessary before shopping. As I waited for my order surrounded by a dozen other coffee drinkers, a familiar tune started to jingle. I sighed knowing that the next words I hear won’t be my grande daily brew but instead “iiiii…don’t want a lot for…” Oh, great, this song again. I just heard it in the car while driving, I heard it this morning when I turned on the news, I even heard it at the grocery store where I quietly changed the lyrics to “…for Christmas issss Fooood.” Why Mariah, why? My future kids are going to hear this, my future grandkids will still be playing it, and by that time it will be remixed with a futuristic music genre we will never understand. This is Mariah’s Christmas and there’s absolutely no escaping it. Vice News recently created a video explaining why some of the major key structures of the song are so musically appealing. It all makes sense now actually. Watch it below and tell us in the comments section what other Christmas song you like to listen to. Seriously, any other song will do.
