In a barren desert wasteland, R&B siren SZA appears on screen riding a horse, finally reaching her destination. Fellow TDE artist and West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar immediately confronts the singer and the two are involved in an epic martial arts battle.

This is how SZA’s “Doves In The Wind” music video starts and it once again embodies the same obscure and unique creativity that the singer has delivered in her previous visuals. Classic martial arts movies are on the forefront as a major inspiration for this particular visual. While we can definitely applaud the clever nod to these movies, the whole film could have been elevated by 1) hiring mainstream Asian actors, 2) using iconic palaces and locations in Asia, and 3) having classic character introductions for SZA and K.Dot. Nevertheless, it’s somewhat a positive step for cultural awareness when hip-hop shows their love for Asian cinema and themes.
