Recap: 2013 UCLA JazzReggae Fest – Jam Day

2013 UCLA JazzReggae Festival: Jam Day

This past weekend, we were able to check out Jam Day of the UCLA JazzReggae Festival.  The temps were just right, the crowd was filled with nothing but good vibes and the music throughout the day helped ring in the warm, carefree atmosphere that summertime is all about.  As for the musical performances, the talent on stage was in abundance as the likes of Ryan McDermott, Jhene Aiko, The Grouch & Eligh, Common and Santigold all put on an outstanding show that had everyone in attendance grooving, clapping, singing along and feeling as good as the conditions outside were.  Hit the jump to check out our full coverage of the event.

Besides the musical artists that were already on the bill to perform, we also spotted a few familiar faces within the crowd as we ran into emcees M.E.D. and Frank Nitty of Stones Throw and Delicious Vinyl.

Jhene Aiko’s soulful set consisted of a surprisingly well done cover of Tupac’s “Keep Ya Head Up”, amongst odes to her favorite medicine of the herbal variety and familiar tunes like “3:16AM”.  And as usual, she was looking as gorgeous as ever.  Flyness is clearly the norm for Ms. Aiko.

Up next were The Grouch & Eligh with a dynamic and energetic set that consisted of their hits like “Boom”, “All In”, and Eligh doing a rapid fire freestyle over the “Look At Me Now” beat.  The crowd was well into the whole performance and was a great lead up to Common’s set that was up next.

The show kept on with the one and only, Chi-Town’s own, Common, taking the stage to an already raucous crowd.  Common was ready to put on a show from the get-go with a lively string of songs like Kid Cudi’s “Make Her Say”, “Universal Mind Control”, “Be”, “Go” and “The Light”.  What’s more, the ever charismatic emcee invited a fortunate female fan on stage as he serenaded her with “Come Close”.

Closing out the day was the ever eclectic and sonically diverse Santigold.  Always one to flaunt an aesthetic that’s as wild and unique as her music, Santigold was joined on stage by back up dancers and a band that were dressed up on some future type deal; with white hair and costumes that could have some easily mistake them as characters that stepped out of the latest episode of Dragon Ball Z.  Bizarre was an understatement, but with Santi, you’d expect this.  She had the crowd all singing along to new jams like “Disparate Youth” and “Freak Like Me”, as well as old joints like “L.E.S. Artistes”, “Say Aha”, and “Unstoppable”.

Richard "Reach" Guinto

Reach loves the Lakers, breakfast, the sound of a Fender Rhodes, and rapping along word for word to Wu Tang's "Triumph." If you're looking for him, he's probably out getting chicken.
